About the workshop

Spend an afternoon at Swallowtail Forest Farm harvesting chestnuts and learning the ins and outs of their chestnut growing operation. 

Swallowtail Forest Farm is a beautiful example of what a farm can look like when trees are woven into the heart of the operation, and there's no better time to see it than harvest.

During this workshop, we’ll spend time in the orchard gathering chestnuts and talking with Ethan Strickler about how he designed, planted, and manages his systems. You’ll learn about tree spacing and orchard layout, as well as how Ethan handles harvests, storage, and sales. We’ll also cover Ethan’s strategies for managing pests like the chestnut weevil, including a demonstration of his simple post-harvest treatment system, which allows him to sell fresh chestnuts without the risk of weevil damage. In addition to chestnuts, Ethan is happy to discuss his experience with pawpaws, bitternut hickory, and black locust. 

Ethan is a mentor in Pasa's Agroforestry Training Program. Pasa staff will be on-site to share how the program works and how you can get involved. 

Whether you're brand new to chestnuts and want to dip your toes in, or you're ready to geek out on chestnut genetics and dig into what managing a mature orchard looks like, join us! Bring your questions and your stories—we're here to cultivate a community of chestnut growers in our region.
