About the event

Spend the first Saturday of fall on a pasture walk at Barbour Grassfed Beef, where you’ll learn about practices for improving soil health and forage. Ted Barbour, along with his family, raises pastured beef on the slopes of their farm. Ask Ted what else he farms and he might answer, “the sun and the microbes.” With his cows on an all-forage diet, Ted’s aim is to grow the best pasture and forage that he can, with help from the sun and soil. During this pasture walk, we’ll tour Ted’s pastures and learn the practices he has implemented to improve his soil health and forage, including shade wagons, clipping, supplemental fertility, and bale grazing. You’ll also hear about Ted’s participation in Pasa’s Soil Health Benchmark Study and see first-hand seven years of soil health data. Lisa Blazure, Director of the PA Soil Health Coalition and Soil Health Coordinator of the Stroud Water Research Center, will also join us in the pasture to collect soil samples, conduct assessments, and share her soil health observations. Come away with new soil health insights and ideas on improvements you can make on your operation—plus, you’ll receive a free Cornell Soil Health Manual! About Barbour Grassfed Beef

Barbour Grassfed Beef is a generational family farm, with the third generation now involved. The farm has been 100% pasture-based since 2004. Their beef is sold direct-to-consumer by the quarter or half in the surrounding region.
About Lisa Blazure

Lisa Blazure has been educating farmers all across the state for 13 years about the importance of soil health. She also serves as a board advisor to the PA No Till Alliance and helps Ted take soil samples every fall for Pasa's Soil Health Benchmark Study.
