Apple Tree

Grafting & Grazing

Friday, May 8
10 am – 4 pm

Cost: $65
About the workshop
Join us at Greene Kitchen Farm in Columbia County for a hands-on tree grafting workshop and silvopasture farm tour. You’ll go home with a tree you grafted yourself! You don’t need a degree in horticulture or a professional nursery background to graft fruit and nut trees—just a desire to learn! Three seasoned grafters will share simple techniques, grafting principles, and foundational skills you can apply right away. They'll cover key topics, such as selecting the right rootstock and scionwood for your needs and choosing from a variety of grafting techniques. We'll use apple trees to guide you through the grafting process. If you have scionwood or other materials you'd like to trade or share, feel free to bring them along to swap with others! We'll also tour Greene Kitchen Farm and chat with owner Joshua Greene about his silvopasture practices. You’ll learn about his innovative approach to developing silvopasture systems that provide natural shade for livestock, including grass-fed beef and pastured poultry. He'll also show us how he protects young trees in actively grazed areas. Come for an afternoon of learning, sharing, and connecting with fellow tree enthusiasts. Whether you’re just getting started or looking to expand your skills, this workshop is designed to empower you to grow your own fruit and nut trees.
About the speakers
Russ Wilson is the Owner of Wilson Land & Cattle Co., where he has integrated a silvopasture system by planting thousands of trees, including hundreds of self-grafted apple varieties that create a unique orchard focused on resilience and productivity. With a low-input approach to farming and livestock, Russ works to advance sustainable agriculture by integrating trees into grazing systems to enhance the health and productivity of his land. Joshua Greene, Director of Education at Trees For Graziers, runs Greene Kitchen Farm with his wife Nichole and children, where they custom graze Certified Organic dairy heifers and raise grass-fed beef and pastured poultry for direct market and ‘good eating’. Joshua and his family have worked to build a flexible, low-input grazing system on average Pennsylvania hillside soils. In place of the dying ash trees, they have planted over 2,000 trees on the farm to provide shade for livestock. In 2023 and 2024, Joshua was mentored by Russ through the Pennsylvania Grazing Lands Coalition’s mentorship program. RJ Brison is currently a soils and compost technician at Longwood Gardens. In the past, he has worked in agroforestry and organic fruit and vegetable production. RJ is always broadening his interests in the natural world. He enjoys bird watching, canoeing, gardening, looking through a microscope, and collecting books.
