About the workshop

Join us at Hilltop Urban Farm for a hands-on workshop on two-stroke and four-stroke engines with trainer Sarah Groat. 


In this workshop, we’ll dive deep into the inner workings of two-stroke and four-stroke gasoline engines. We’ll learn how they function, their systems and parts, preventative maintenance tactics, and how to diagnose common issues. You’ll receive hands-on training using the provided tools to take apart four-stroke engines. Alternatively, you can bring your own small engine to the training and learn how to service it.


This workshop is ideal for folks who have operated or owned small engines and want to learn how to care for and fix them. We encourage you to bring your own small two-stroke or four-stroke gasoline engines, but it is not required!

About the instructor

Since 2018, Sarah Groat “SG” (they/she) has been providing timely, honest, and affordable service and repair work, as well as teaching farmers how to operate and maintain equipment. Over the past 17 years of growing food, making compost, and teaching adults and kids, SG has been developing their knack for operating equipment and fixing machines. SG has been fine-tuning their tractor operation and small engines workshops for several years and has traveled across New York state and Pennsylvania to train farmers on the function, operation, and service of their equipment. 


Though SG loves to repair equipment, they have found they are most joyous when teaching. In 2021, SG worked with the Hudson Valley Farm Hub to co-lead and create a curriculum for a 10-day farm mechanic basics course, which they continue to teach every winter. 


Throughout their work, they strive to make mechanical information more accessible to Queer, Trans, Black, Indigenous, and People of Color, women, and non-binary folks. SG is based in Greenwich, New York.

Accessibility

  • Attendees can expect to walk on flat gravel paths and uneven, unpaved terrain.

  • Attendees will be in direct sun for the entirety of the event.

  • There will be seating for a portion of the event.

  • This event includes an on-farm workshop. Please dress in comfortable, weather-appropriate farm clothes that allow you to move freely.
