The Nicholas and Athena Karabots Pediatric Care Center in West Philadelphia has an active community vegetable garden. With the help of hundreds of volunteers, the Health and Wellness Garden has about 1,200 feet of raised beds filled with tubers, herbs, leafy greens, and other vegetables, as well as a fruit tree orchard producing delicious fruits for the community. Surplus food from the garden is distributed to Early Head Start families in the community.
The Health and Wellness Garden, created in partnership with America’s Credit Unions and Credit Unions for Kids, is a unique, labyrinth-style space designed to grow more than just fruits and vegetables—it nurtures health, peace, and community connection. It is part of a larger wellness vision to engage patients and their families with nutritious and healthy food, provide them with hands-on experience in nature, and inspire them to grow produce and flowers in the space they have available. The garden also hosts educational activities, community events, and cooking demonstrations with seasonal produce.
